Pregnant woman and newborn receive vital care after emergency transfer from Río Tambo to Atalaya

The rapid intervention of the staff of the Satipo Health Network, the IPRESS Santa Rosita de Shirintiari and the Intercultural Hospital of Atalaya was key to saving the life of a 23-year-old woman and her newborn. The patient, at 41 weeks of gestation and having had contractions since the previous day, received immediate attention in her locality, where she underwent a comprehensive obstetric evaluation that allowed her clinical status to be stabilized.

Due to the urgency, a safe transfer by river in a small boat was coordinated from Río Tambo to the port of Atalaya, and then continued by land to the Intercultural Hospital. Throughout the entire journey, the pregnant woman had permanent support from trained health personnel.

Today, both mother and baby are in good health, evidencing the importance of timely care and an efficient referral system in remote areas, where rapid response can make the difference between life and death.
