Pre-professional practices: Five recommendations to start them successfully

In line with this and regarding the recent law that recognizes pre-professional internships as work experience, Fabián Espinel, head of Employability at the Certus Institute, points out the importance of preparing for this stage that marks the beginning of our professional life.

“The pandemic has shown us that currently it is no longer enough just to have knowledge of our own career, but that we must also develop technological capabilities and soft skills that complement our profile. Therefore, it is necessary for young people to identify these opportunities in order to have greater chances of success when facing a selection process”, mentions Fabian Espinel from the Certus institute.

In line with this, the Certus institute specialist provides 5 recommendations to start the search for pre-professional internships:

  • make a good (CV): Make it attractive, clear and concise. It is important to highlight your skills and aptitudes, as well as your main academic achievements. Try not to exceed one page and check the spelling. “At Certus, for example, our students have access to artificial intelligence tools such as Dr. CV, a platform that performs a detailed diagnosis of their resume in minutes and provides them with recommendations to improve it”says Espinel.

  • Strengthen your profile in a professional network: Share your CV on a professional social network like LinkedIn so recruiters can get to know you and expand your network of contacts. Also, remember that it is important to maintain a good image both online and offline. Be careful what you comment and share on your social networks.
  • Access job boards: In addition to LinkedIn, there are different job platforms where they publish calls for pre-professional internships, such as: Computrabajo, Bumeran, Laborum, Indeed, Buscojobs, etc. Create a professional profile on these platforms and activate the call alerts that are of interest to you to find out about job offers.
  • Ask about the agreements of your institute or university: In general, institutions have job boards and labor agreements for their students. Participate and request information about it. “For example, Certus annually holds the event “Employability Week” where various companies publish job offers exclusively for our educational community”commented.
  • Strengthen your skills and competencies: Take into account that companies are looking for people not only with technical knowledge, but also with soft skills such as leadership, creativity, innovation, teamwork, among others; as well as skills linked to the digital environment. Try to train yourself and participate in volunteering or related activities.

Finally, the Certus specialist recommends a good preparation before an interview. “If you were finally chosen in a selection process, it is very important to investigate the company and the sector to which it belongs. Also, carefully review the job description so you can better prepare and practice what you are going to present to your potential employer.” finished.
