Former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski confirmed that he will be a pre-candidate for the Senate for the Force and Freedom alliance, a coalition that is nominating former minister Fiorela Molinelli for the presidency of the Republic.
The former president assured that he has “a lot of experience in mining, environmental, economic, and international issues.”
“I think it could contribute to making the new Senate, which is convened for the first time in many years, a credible participant that gives confidence to the population,” he said on RPP.
The former head of state, who has served as director of the Central Bank, minister of Energy and Mines, Economy and president of the Council of Ministers, would head the list for the Senate for Lima of the electoral alliance.
The 87-year-old economist highlighted Molinelli’s qualities. “Fiorella is an organized person, who has managed EsSalud for several years, he knows the public sector well. (…) I think he is a good option,” he said.
“Vizcarra is a Trojan horse”
When asked about the registration of former president Martín Vizcarra as a candidate for vice presidency in the group led by his brother Mario, Kuzcynski assured that this matter “will have to be aired in the courts because he [Martín] “He has a very clear disqualification.”
“The brother is a Trojan horse that they have put there so, in reality, that Martín can enter at some point. It is a trick. The brother does not have any political experience,” he questioned.
On the other hand, the former boss highlighted the work of President José Jerí, who considered that, “to the surprise of many, he is handling himself in an intelligent way.”
“He is confronting, at least in the media, the whole issue of extortion and crime, which is very good. I think he has a very defensible cabinet,” he stated.
Congress is irresponsible
The former president questioned whether he had increased bureaucracy to develop mining projects. According to the former head of state “to make a mining investment, almost 300 administrative decisions are needed.”
“We also have a history in Peru of disputes with investors at the ICSID, which is the World Bank’s center for investment settlements and disputes. We have won some cases, but we have lost a lot. An absolutely radical change must be made here,” he said.
However, Kucyznski stressed that “that does not mean that environmentally sites must be destroyed, as was the case many years ago.” In addition, the economist highlighted the record price that metals have reached and questioned whether, despite that, Peru has a fiscal deficit.
“We must take advantage of that moment to build fiscal reserves, reorganize the budget. At this moment, the Peruvian State should not have a fiscal deficit. Zero, it should have a surplus as it did when I was Minister of Economy and later when Thorne was my Minister of Economy, when he tried to reduce the immense deficit that the previous government (Humala) had left,” he stated.
Along these lines, the former president subscribed to the warning made by the Fiscal Council, who warned that Congressional regulations will trigger the fiscal deficit, and considered that “Congress is completely irresponsible.”
