The indigenous leader, Virgilio Trujillo, who was assassinated on June 30, 2022 in Puerto Ayacucho, in the state of Amazonas, was decorated postmortem by the Canadian Embassy, who awarded him the Human Rights award.
The recognition was received by Ernesto Trujillo, Virgilio’s father, who was accompanied by members of the United Piaroas Indigenous Organization of Sipapo (OIPUS), and the Territorial Guardians of the Autana municipality of Amazonas state.
The prize was awarded together with the Coalition of University Chairs and Human Rights Centers of Venezuela. Virgilio Trujillo denounced mining exploitation, environmental destruction on his land, drug trafficking and the invasion of irregular armed groups.
“After an intense struggle to defend our territories and to expel these armed invaders, they made an attempt on the lives of our children. We lost my son Virgilio there,” said Ernesto Trujillo.
“However, we remain in the fight, these boys who are here together are the followers, because we are the fighters, this generation has the commitment to safeguard and protect this territory, that is why I ask you, this afternoon, to support us so that we can continue to protect our territories, a territory that not only belongs to the Uwottüja people, but to the entire country,” said a press release from the NGO Provea.
