Rome. Three parties of the government coalition led by Mario Draghi in Italy yesterday refused to participate in a vote of confidence in the Senate, which led de facto to the end of the National Unity Executive.
The prime minister lost the support of three major parties: former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia (right); La Liga, by far-right Matteo Salvini; and the 5 Star Movement (anti-system).
Due to this situation, Draghi will have to present his resignation to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
The Italian prime minister had anticipated yesterday, in a tense debate in the Senate, that the only way out of the current political crisis that Italy is going through was to reach a new “agreement” between the parties in dispute, which has not been possible.
“In 18 months of government led by Draghi they have dismantled all the measures adopted by his predecessor Giuseppe Conte”, leader of the M5E, lamented Maria Domenica Castellone, spokesperson for the movement in the Senate.
In spite of everything, yesterday Draghi won a confidence motion in the Senate by 95 votes in favor and 38 against, but dozens of senators were absent from the procedure.
However, and because of what Draghi said, new elections are in sight.
