In force since the 30th of October, the new rules in the law of foreigners in Portugal facilitate the entry of people who intend to live in the country.
Foreign students who want to obtain a residence visa will, from now on, have their process analyzed and approved in less time – on average, two months, compared to the previous model.
The facilitation of visa processes will also apply to citizens of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), which includes Brazil.
But the most significant change was the creation of a visa for foreigners looking for a job in Portugal. To live there, the visa will be valid for 120 days and can be extended for another 60 days.
The person will have to prove income to stay in the country during the job search period, in addition to other requirements.
According to 2021 data from the Portuguese Foreigners and Borders Service, there are almost 700,000 foreigners in the country. Brazilians correspond to more than 29% of this total, being the largest foreign community on Portuguese soil.
Further information on visa categories, documents and forms of obtaining them can be found at Ministry of Foreign Affairs website of the Portuguese government.
