Port of Matarani signs addendum for expansion with new investments for US$700 million

The Peruvian State and TISUR, concessionaire company of the Port Terminal of Mataranisigned an addendum that will allow an investment of $700 million aimed at expanding the operational capacity and strengthening the competitiveness of the main port in the south of the country. The ceremony took place this Thursday at the Government Palace, with the participation of the President of the Republic, José Jerí, and executive authorities.

The agreement marks a new milestone in national port history, the result of a technical and legal evaluation process developed for more than two years, with the participation of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC), the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), ProInversión and OSITRAN.

With this addendum, the Port of Matarani will increase berth capacity by 25%, cargo handling by new electric cranes by 50%, and mineral storage capacity by 22%, strengthening its role as a multipurpose terminal and a key piece of Peruvian foreign trade.

During the ceremony, the general manager of TISUR, Mauricio Núñez del Prado, highlighted that the signing of the addendum to the concession contract for the Port of Matarani is the result of several years of joint effort between the concessionaire and the State, in the search for an agreement of common benefit for the entire southern region and for the national port system.

He added that the challenge now is to “honor the commitments made, execute the committed infrastructure works, raise the levels of efficiency and productivity with which we have operated over the last two decades, and continue to responsibly play our role as a strategic partner of the region and a fundamental piece in the logistics chain of foreign trade.”

Since 1999, TISUR has moved more than 100 million tons of cargo and has invested more than one billion soles in port infrastructure. During this period, it has contributed a similar amount to the State through taxes and remuneration, consolidating itself as the main source of formal employment in the province of Islay.

In turn, the Minister of Transportation and Communications Aldo Prieto pointed out that, since its concession began, “Matarani has established itself as an economic engine for Arequipa and for the entire south of the country. Today we renew that trust, ensuring the continuity of a model that generates employment and promotes foreign trade.”

The new investments will make it possible to meet the logistical demand of large mining projects such as Zafranal ($2,000 million) and Tía María ($1,800 million), in addition to Majes-Siguas II, Haquira, Corani, Falchani and Cotabambas, which together exceed $11,000 million in investment. Likewise, they will strengthen attention to ongoing operations such as Cerro Verde, Las Bambas, Antapaccay, Constancia and Mina Justa, which generate more than 250,000 direct and indirect jobs.

TISUR is a subsidiary of TRAMARSA, a leading Peruvian company in the port sector with the support of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), part of BlackRock, a global investor specialized in developing and operating some of the largest and most complex assets in the world in energy, transportation, digital infrastructure and water and waste management.

“Today we renew our commitment to continue working with maximum effort on the challenges assumed, promoting the development of our community, our clients and users, in close collaboration with the authorities, just as we have done during these 26 years of uninterrupted management,” concluded Núñez del Prado.
