the minister of Transport and CommunicationsRichard Tineo Quispe, supervised the progress of the construction of the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal and indicated that, with this megaproject, Peru aims to become the hub of Asia in the South Pacific.
He indicated that it is a modern, well-equipped terminal with the capacity to receive large container ships (carrying 18,000 containers) from the Asian region. In the first stage it will have four berths.
The head of the MTC explained that “this megaproject will also allow the redistribution of cargo to other nearby countries such as Chile, Ecuador and Colombia”. The investment of the project in its first stage amounts to US$ 1,300 million.

In addition, the terminal will allow the access roads to the port of Callao to be decongested, generating opportunities for cargo from the east and central highlands. Also raising its competitiveness against other markets.
The cargo that will be mobilized will generate growth in national foreign trade. The goal is to move one million containers a year.
The works in the megaproject, in charge of the Chinese company Cosco Shipping, have a general advance of work of more than 20%. As for the movement of earth, this has an advance of more than 63%.
The project is designed to have four docks in a first stage, which will make it one of the largest complexes in the region. This will increase the growth of port demand, reduce costs and cost overruns in the national and international markets, and will have a positive impact on the economy.
Currently, the 1.8 km long tunnel that connects the entrance complex with the port operating area is being drilled.
The MTC maintained that the construction of the Port of Chancay will economically benefit thousands of families and will generate 7,500 direct and indirect jobs in this first stage.
