Population of working age decreases and unemployment increases, according to INE

Until April of this year, the Permanent Household Survey of the National Institute of Statistics reveals a decrease in the population of working age and a growth in unemployment and underemployment.

The economically active population decreased by 25,934 people between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, mainly in the male sector, with a subtraction of 16,774, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

The increase in the inactive population, that is, outside the labor force, went from 27.9% to 28.5% for March this year. The phenomenon was accentuated in rural areas, which went from 72% to 70% between December and March.

Regarding the rate of underemployment due to insufficient working time, that is, less than 30 hours per week, an increase of 0.6% was reported, even so, it is still lower than that of the first quarter of 2021: 5.2% against 5.7%.

As for unemployment, defined as those who are available to work but cannot do so, there is talk of an increase from 6.8% to 8.5% between last December and March this year. In numbers, the percentage represents 370,030 inhabitants, of which 160,720 men and 156,310 women.
