Havana Cuba. – An article published in The New Herald the past 1st January revealed that in 2022 the state of Florida registered the fastest population growth in the country, something that had not happened since 1957 according to data from the United States Census Bureau.
Although Florida’s population has increased steadily every year since the 1940s, between July 2021 and July 2022 it grew by 1.9%.

Christopher McCarty, director of the University of Florida’s Office of Economic and Business Research, has explained that population growth is due to more people moving to the state than leaving it. The New Herald also revealed that the majority of people moving to Florida in 2022 were older, which could become a worrying trend considering that Florida has one of the oldest populations in the country, and its economy is dependent on new residents who generate income and wealth.
Between July 2021 and July 2022 the state had the fourth fastest growing economy in the nation, but according to McCarty, continued net migration is not sustainable as growth exacerbates problems like inflation and housing shortages.
Federal data has shown that more than 220,000 residential housing units were approved during that time, representing the highest number of new building permits in the state since 2006.
