In the midst of forceful messages of transparency, the Board of Directors of the Popular Party (PP) will choose this weekend the presidential candidate, in the figure of Martín Torrijos Espino, and his 13 candidates for a seat in the Central American Parliament (Parlacen, for the general elections of May 5, 2024.
On Saturday, 424 PP delegates will select the candidates for Parlacen, while on Sunday they will elect Martín Torrijos Espino as their presidential candidate, through two extraordinary national congresses, at the Convention Center of the Marriott Hotel, Albrook, in this capital.
Zulphy Santamaría, vice president of the collective, assured that the National Congress on Sunday will celebrate a great electoral party at 2:00 pm, when the official results of the election of the presidential candidate, Martín Torrijos Espino, are known.
Santamaría highlighted that they have toured the entire country with their candidate [Martín Torrijos Espino]who has been very well received not only by members of the PP, but also by various groups in Panamanian society, including independents and Panamanians from other political parties.
Asked about the rumors of an attempt to “purchase delegates”, she assured that the party’s leadership trusts its membership, and that they are “people with a high level of ethics and transparency. We are a small but cohesive party, all our faith and hope in the delegates.”
“The delegates are convinced and encouraged, and “they will not allow themselves to be confused or accept perks of any kind, since not only the party is at stake, but also the future of the country; and they know it; Our party has never been accused of corruption,” Santamaría stressed.
He recalled that the Popular Party activists have been in different governments and have never been involved in acts of corruption.
Meanwhile, Vice President Luis Castillo also stated that, together with Torrijos Espino, the PP will build a strong alliance, for which it will continue talks with independents, political parties, groups, unions, associations and civil society to bring their candidate to the Presidency on May 5th.
Because it is a group with less than 100,000 activists, and by order of the Electoral Tribunal, the PP chooses its presidential candidate through an extraordinary National Congress, and not in primary elections.
The national congresses on Saturday and Sunday will start at 9:00 am
