The president of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference He recalled that the Pope fulfills responsibilities in the Holy See and, therefore, his visit must follow a series of official protocols between the Peruvian State and the Vatican State. “I tell you about 80% because it is a whole structure that moves. There is a dicastery that prepares the visit and the request has to go through that instance. Then the countries are responded to. (…) The pope is also head of state of the Vatican State. He cannot come if the president of Peru does not invite him,” he explained.
Likewise, it was confirmed that both the current presidential administration of José Jerí like that of Dina Boluarte They had already sent letters to invite the Supreme Pontiff to visit Peru. “Both the current president and the previous president have sent the letters. That means that the invitations have already been sent,” he added.
Lima and Chiclayo: destinations of Pope Leo XIV
Monsignor García Camader pointed out that the visit of Pope Leo XIV has not yet defined the cities that will be included in his agenda. However, he announced that two destinations would be practically confirmed: Lima and Chiclayo. The latter city maintains a close link with the supreme pontiff, who previously served as bishop in the northern city.
“We, starting in March, must have established the organizing committee for the Holy Father’s visit. (…) The country that the Pope will visit is Peru. I believe that the main place he will go to after Lima will be Chiclayo. That is fixed, 100%.” In addition, he confirmed that the rest of the cities that León XIV will visit will depend on the days he has available during his stay in the country.
At the end of the press conference, Monsignor García Camader unveiled an official bust of Leo XIV, placed at the headquarters of the Episcopal Conference. This monument bears the following phrase on a plaque: “Pope Leo XIV: he knew, loved and evangelized Peru.”
