The Pope Francisco today expressed his closeness to the victims of the fire at the Matanzas fuel depot, which caused one death and several missing persons. His new reference to the unfortunate event occurs in a message during the general audience on Wednesday.

“I want to express my closeness in a special way to those affected by the tragedy caused by the explosions and the fire at the Matanzas oil base in Cuba,” the pontiff said in Spanish, during his weekly meeting with the faithful in the Pablo Aula Vatican VI.

“Let us ask that our mother, queen of heaven, watch over the victims of that tragedy and their families and that she intercede for all of us before the Lord so that we know how to bear witness to faith and hope in the life of the future world. May God bless you”, she finished.

The pontiff, who visited the island in September 2015, lamented for the second time one of the worst industrial disasters in the country’s history, in Matanzas (western Cuba), in which there are also fourteen missing, 125 injured and 19 hospitalized.

The Argentine pope, who entered the room walking without the need for the wheelchair he frequently uses due to his knee problems, at one point during the audience addressed the faithful in Spanish, as he traditionally does.

“Chileans, Mexicans, Argentines… there is everything,” he said, pointing to the audience in the room and eliciting applause from the faithful.
