MERIDA, Mexico – Pope Francis He said on Sunday that he felt “worried” for Venezuela, which is “going through a critical situation.”

“I sincerely call on all parties to seek the truth, to act with moderation, to avoid any form of violence, to resolve disputes through dialogue, to take into account the true good of the people and not partisan interests,” he said during the customary Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square.

“Let us entrust this country to the intercession of Our Lady of Coromoto, so beloved and venerated by Venezuelans, and to the prayers of Blessed José Gregorio Hernández, whose figure unites us all,” he added.

Opposition march on Saturday

On Saturday, leader María Corina Machado reappeared before thousands of his followers at the opposition demonstration in Caracas.

Responding to the opposition’s call and despite threats from the government, thousands of Venezuelans mobilized throughout the country in what was a show of strength by the movement led by María Corina Machado and Edmundo González.

“You are the heroes of this story. Every Venezuelan who did not give up, who knows that we won. Edmundo González is the president-elect and our Venezuelan flag is the symbol of freedom. Venezuela will be free very soon,” Machado, who is facing threats of imprisonment from the Maduro government, told the cheering crowd.

“The people are with us. We must be convinced that this is above us. It is a fight for the good, for human dignity. We are going with firmness, resilience, and confidence. We are united and we know what we have to do,” said the leader, at a demonstration where candidate Edmundo González was not present.

The opposition leader thanked the international community for its support and spoke out against Maduro’s legal actions.

Large mobilizations were reported in other Venezuelan states and in the diaspora.

Chavismo responded to the opposition mobilization with a rally of its supporters.
