Francis announced by surprise the celebration of this new consistory after the Sunday Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace and advanced that the appointments “express the universality of the Church” because they are distributed throughout the planet, he reported. EFE.

Of these 21 new cardinals, 18 would have the right to vote in the future and eventual conclave to succeed Francis, as they are under 80 years of age, as stipulated by Canon Law, while three exceed that age but the pope has wanted to highlight that way his “service to the Church”.

Among these last “emeritus” cardinals are the Venezuelan Diego Padrón Sánchez; the Capuchin friar Luis Pascual Dri, confessor of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pompeii in Buenos Aires and the Italian nuncio Agostino Marchetto.
