Pope Francis appeals to the "awareness" of world leaders to secure peace in Ukraine

Pope Francis claimed this Sunday (02.13.2022) to world leaders “every effort” possible to ensure peace in Ukraineamid tensions over the presence of Russian troops on its eastern border.

“The news coming out of Ukraine is very worrying,” expressed the Supreme Pontiff from the window of the Apostolic Palace after the recitation of the Angelus.

“I trust in the intercession of the Virgin Mary and in the conscience of the political leaders involved,” he added, while calling for “every effort in favor of peace.”

Pope Francis thus expressed his concern about the situation in Ukraine and by the tensions between the Western NATO countries and Russia, which continues to deny its intention to invade its neighbor, although it continues to concentrate troops on the border they share.

It is not the first time that Francis has referred to this crisis, since on February 9 he advocated dialogue to avoid “the madness” of war.

A few days earlier, on January 23, he also denounced the escalation of tensions and revealed his concern about the possible repercussions for security on the European continent.

“I am following with concern the increase in tensions that threaten to inflict a new blow on peace in Ukraine and call into question security on the European continent with even more extensive repercussions,” he warned at that Angelus.
