Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican figure with a strong chance of running for the White House in 2024, continues to gain ground in hypothetical matchups against former President Donald Trump.
A new poll of the Texas Republican Party places him defeating former President Trump by 11 points in a hypothetical fight. Among voters likely to participate in the 2024 presidential primary in Texas, 43% said they would support DeSantis and 32% Trump, according to the poll results.
Texas Republican Party Chairman Matt Rinaldi tweeted his support for DeSantis after the Florida governor won his reelection last week. “Ron DeSantis and his optimistic brand of bold, unapologetic conservatism is a winning brand and the Republican Party should take note,” he said.
Trump is coming under fire for backing defeated candidates in the midterms after the Republican Party lost the Senate to Democrats and many gubernatorial races.
The Texas Republican Party poll was conducted Nov. 12-13 among 1,099 people. The margin of error is 2.96 points.
