The Chamber of Deputies decided to adjourn the extraordinary session convened for Wednesday afternoon. The motion was made by Hugo Ramírez, national deputy for the ANR (official party). In the session, the request for impeachment against Sandra Quiñónez, Attorney General of the State, for poor performance of her functions, should be treated as the only item on the Agenda. With this, the extraordinary session passed for this Monday, August 1 at 2:00 p.m.
A debate was generated prior to the vote because the Chartist sector claimed that the fourth intermission could not be extended for more than 24 hours. The response of some opposition legislators was that it is not proposed that the fourth intermission continue, but that the session be suspended and a new extraordinary session be called for Monday. Finally, the motion of the opponents prospered.
Basilio Núñez, national deputy for the ANR, accused the opponents of violating the National Constitution. Since to swear Ibarrola, Rejala’s resignation was needed, according to what he said. Sebastián Villarejo, deputy for Patria Querida (PPQ), referred for his part that there were previous cases where permits were accepted with the endorsement of the Colorados, when now they refuse, leaving consistency aside. He cited the case of Rocío Abed who replaced Ulises Quintana and was supported by Basilio Núñez himself.
Pedro Alliana, national deputy for the ANR (chartist), denounced that several deputies are being pressured to vote in favor of impeachment. He argued that they do not understand the need for the internal regulations of the Lower House to come out in favor of certain conjunctural majorities. “They are playing with the patience of citizens,” he said.
With this, the trial of Quiñónez is delayed. Two votes are missing to achieve the 53 necessary for his dismissal. These are two liberals; Carlos Noguera and María de la Nieve López. The opposition hopes to be able to convince these legislators in these days to reach the votes. At the same time, a group of self-convened citizens has been angering both deputies in order to pressure them to change the direction of their votes in favor of impeachment.
