HAVANA, Cuba.- The political prisoner Yuri Almenares González, held in the Combinado del Este maximum rigor prison, located at kilometer 13 ½ of the Monumental road, in the Guanabacoa municipality of the capital of the island, faces a sentence of seven years in prison, then that this Wednesday, August 3, the Cuban authorities held the trial against him.
As CubaNet learned from Dalvinder Singh, a prisoner of Indian nationality, Almenares is currently isolated. Singh briefly shared details of the process against Almenares González, and assured that the case was concluded for sentencing.
The source told CubaNet that Almenares described the oral hearing of his trial as “a great theater plagued with lies, where prosecutors and judges were in cahoots against him.” The sentence would be seven years in prison for the alleged crime of ongoing enemy propaganda.
According to the source, the evidence presented against him was some comments against the dictatorship found on the cell phone that was confiscated.
On August 2, Almenares González was notified, after 9:00 pm, that his trial would be held the following day.
According to the source told CubaNet, Lieutenant Colonel Pedro, from Department 21 (Crimes Against State Security) appeared in his cell to inform him that the trial would be the following day, and added that the process, previously scheduled for the Provincial Court People’s Court of Havana, located in front of the Capitol, on Teniente Rey and Prado (the so-called Audiencia de La Habana), was surprisingly changed to the People’s Municipal Court of Marianao, located on Calle 100 and 33, according to the prisoner, to avoid the public assistance.
During the trial, Almenares González expressed his reasons for declaring himself on a hunger strike since July 29 and accused Major Osmani Ramírez Díaz, head of Unit 3, of inflicting a savage beating on him, of which he still has traces on his body and face.
Dalvinder Singh points out that Almenares González continues on a hunger strike and from his isolation he is frequently heard shouting slogans against the dictatorship.
On July 30, the political prisoner was brutally beaten by officers inside the prison, according to what confidential sources told CubaNet at the time.
