Political prisoner Nidia Barbosa is in intensive care, but her family is denied access to her

The political prisoner Nidia Barbosa is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Japan-Nicaragua Hospital, in the department of Granada, the Legal Defense Unit (UDJ) denounced this Friday night on her Twitter account.

According to the publication made by the UDJ, the director of the Granada Penitentiary System, Ermel Fernández, does not allow Barbosa’s daughter to enter the ICU room “claiming that he has no order to allow it.” The complaint does not specify since when the political area has been admitted to said hospital.

«The political prisoner Nidia Barbosa is in the ICU of the Japan Hospital. The SPN director of Granada, Ermel Fernández, does not allow his daughter to enter the ICU to see Barbosa, alleging that he has an order not to allow it, nor does he provide precise information on her health status, ”explained the UDJ.

The Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy (ACJD), of which Barbosa is a member, spoke out through social networks demanding his “immediate freedom”, since his health condition “is serious”.

“Thinking differently and protesting is not a crime. Freedom because he is innocent!” demanded the opposition organization.

On February 16, the 66-year-old political prisoner was sentenced to 11 years in prison plus an 800-day fine, which is equivalent to 52,767.46 cordobas. The Masaya Criminal District Judge, William Howard López, was in charge of handing down the sentence.

The opponent from Masaya was found guilty for the alleged crimes of “undermining national integrity” and “propagation of false news through information and communication technologies.” The victim is “Nicaraguan society and the State.”

The woman was arrested on November 6, 2021, on the eve of the presidential elections where the dictatorial couple Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo were re-elected for a new period as the Nicaraguan Head of State.
