Political prisoner Maikel Puig, on hunger strike: “Here they are applying pressure”

MIAMI, United States. – The political prisoner Maikel Puig Bergolla confirmed this Thursday, in a phone call from Quivicán prisonin Mayabeque, who was on a hunger strike, along with at least 12 other political prisoners who demand that the high representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, take an interest in the issue of human rights during his visit to the island.

In the telephone call addressed to his wife, Saily Núñez, Puig Bergolla also indicates that, on Wednesday night, the prison authorities transferred the political prisoners Roberto Pérez Fonseca, Juan Enrique Pérez and Aníbal Yaciel Palau to an unknown location.

“Here they don’t let me make phone calls; the re-educator told me that you couldn’t make a phone call. Now I am talking on the phone and she is next to me. (…) What I told you yesterday [miércoles] It was all a lie, it’s all a hoax, here they don’t let you call, here they are putting pressure, here they are doing all that. Here the Police are doing what comes out of the p… ”, Puig Bergolla said to his wife.

The political prisoner, sentenced to 12 years of prison for his participation in the popular demonstrations of July 11, 2021 (11J), he refers to another call made this Wednesday to his wife in which he denied that she was on a hunger strike.

In the audio, which has been released by numerous activists and organizations, he also asks Núñez to denounce his situation. “You have to make complaints, make a lot of complaints. From today I am not going to call you anymore ”, she assures.

At another time, addressing the re-educator who watches him, he says: “Don’t take my phone away. I have to speak what it is (…). You don’t have to ask me any questions.”

“Here the re-educator is under pressure from the people,” he tells his wife. “These people are ending up here. What I told you yesterday was a lie because these people were here in front of you. From today I am not going to call anymore and then planted ”, she declared.

This Wednesday it emerged that at least 13 Cuban political prisoners had declared a hunger strike, less than 24 hours after the start of Josep Borrell’s visit to the island.

“Right now there are at least 13 political prisoners planted in Cuban jails. From their bodies as almost the only resource, these brave men insist on continuing to be protagonists in the fight for their freedom and that of all.” denounced this wednesday activist and art curator Anamely Ramos.

According to the organization Cuba de Luto and numerous activists, in addition to Puig Bergolla, they are on a hunger strike Yosvany Rosell Garcia in Holguin; José Rodríguez Herrada in Villa Clara; and Roberto Pérez Fonseca, Aníbal Yaciel Palau Jacinto, Juan Enrique Pérez Sánchez, Manuel Velázquez Licea, Lidier Ramón Hernández Urbita, Nilo Abrante Santiago, Yasiel Martínez Carrasco, Carlos Ernesto Díaz González (Ktivo Dissident), Abel Lázaro Machado Conde and William Valera Suárez, in Mayabeque.
