Havana Cuba. – José Díaz Silva, coordinator of the Opposition Movement for a New Republic (MONR)began a hunger strike this Monday in the maximum security prison Combinado del Este, in protest at the suspension of his family visits.
According to his wife, the activist of the Ladies in White Lourdes Esquivel Vieyto, the opposition leader has not received family or conjugal visits for more than two months.
Likewise, the activist assured CubaNet that the political prisoner also demands medical attention for his illnesses, including kidney problems and body aches.
The situation that led the MONR leader to start the hunger strike was denounced this Tuesday by Esquivel Vieytoen at the Directorate of Penitentiary Establishments, located at 15 and K, in Vedado. In that institution, the lady in white only received an answer that “the visit had already been scheduled” for her husband.
The MONR activist also called for “no more abuses” and that Díaz Silva’s rights are no longer violated.
The also vice president of the Council for the Democratic Transition in Cuba (CTDC) was arrested in March and initially taken to the detention center known as El Vivac. Days later he was transferred to Villa Marista and finally to the Combinado del Este, after they revoked a sentence of two years of correctional work without internment for the alleged crime of threats.
In October, Díaz Silva denounced on Radio Martí threats from State Security to make him leave the country.
On that occasion, they granted him a 24-hour pass to apply for a visa at the United States embassy in Havana.
The trial against Díaz Silva was scheduled for last October 6 at the Diez de Octubre Municipal Court; however, he was suspended without offering any explanation to the opponent’s family or his defense attorney. So far, the activist continues without a date to be tried.
