HAVANA, Cuba.- Joaquín Camejo Corrales, who is serving a sentence of 24 years in prison for an alleged crime of sabotage.
Camejo Corrales is a railway worker who was sentenced along with other co-workers on December 24, 2020 in the Chamber of Crimes Against State Security of the People’s Provincial Court of Havana, for the alleged derailment of the Mariel-Havana train. Cardenas.
Joaquín Camejo was initially serving a sentence in the Combinado del Este maximum rigor prison, located at kilometer 13 ½ of the Monumental road, in the Guanabacoa municipality of the island’s capital, until he was transferred “in the mountains” to the eastern prison. on August 29, 2021.
According to what he denounced, the prison authorities did not offer him explanations about the possible causes of the sudden transfer, although he assumes that it was as punishment for his protests demanding a review of the cause, since he assures that he was convicted without evidence.
At the time of his imprisonment, Joaquín Camejo Corrales had his home in Havana and the only relative who could visit him in prison was his father, an elderly man over 80 years old. His transfer to a penitentiary center located at the other end of the island, in addition to preventing the family meeting, violates the Jail and Prison Regulations of our country, which establishes a limit distance between the prison and the inmate’s home, for which Camejo Corrales claims to be returned to his province as established by the aforementioned code.
On this occasion he also wrote a letter to the Catholic Church asking them to intercede for him so that his cause is reviewed.
