Havana Cuba. – From the maximum rigor Kilo 5 ½ penitentiary center, located in Pinar del Río, the activist and political prisoner Jorge Luis Rodríguez Valdés denounces the violation of his rights by officials of the judicial system of that province.
Jorge Luis Rodríguez Valdés, alias “Tangallo”, is 45 years old and lives in the municipality of San Juan y Martínez in Pinar del Río. He was arrested by State Security agents on April 27, 2022 in retaliation for painting posters against the dictatorship in an office of the Military Committee and at the whereabouts of the train from his place of residence, for which he was sentenced to a a four-year prison sentence (for the alleged crime of contempt against the figure of the designated president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez).
In relation to his cause, through a telephone call he was able to make it known that on January 11 of this year he was given a document in which he was notified that his time in captivity would begin to count from January 2. November 2022.
The activist stressed that in this way the first six months of imprisonment would not be considered, contrary to what is indicated both in the prison regulations and in the Cuban Penal Code. Therefore, he accuses the Second Chamber of the Provincial Court of Pinar del Río of violating his rights as a person deprived of liberty.
It also noted that the document in question is signed by the secretary of the room, an official named Julio Alberto Montesinos Acosta.
In his call, the activist and political prisoner also denounced that the water available to inmates for hygiene and drinking in the Pinar del Río provincial prison comes from a dam and is contaminated.
He also pointed out that for some time he has suffered from a persistent respiratory infection for which the prison authorities do not provide him with the corresponding medications, and he blames the head of the prison’s Medical Services, Major Luis Mijares Acosta, for this.
Jorge Luis Rodríguez Valdés is a member of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), led by José Daniel Ferrer García, as well as the opposition organization Alianza Patriótica, chaired by Eduardo Díaz Fleitas. Both leaders are political expressions of the group of 75.
