Political prisoner denounces living conditions in forced labor camp

Eldris González Pozo

GUANTANAMO, Cuba. — The political prisoner Eldris Gonzalez Pozoa member of the Eastern Democratic Alliance (ADO), denounced the conditions in which the inmates of the Plan Confianza labor camp are forced to live, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.

González Pozo, who remains detained in that open phase center, assured CubaNet that several of the inmates who are in the place have to sleep on the floor due to overcrowding.

Although the Plan Confianza work camp has a capacity for 400 inmates, the current workforce exceeds the number of inmates by 83, which has forced many of them to sleep on the floor.

The political prisoner also informed this newspaper that the authorities eliminated the snacks that the inmates received, a very important nutritional supplement for a camp where the inmates must carry out intense work days.

According to González Pozo, at meals the inmates receive, as a main dish, animal waste, such as viscera, and poorly prepared peas and rice.

At breakfast, the inmates only receive a piece of bread below the regulatory weight, with tea water, made with the plant that is found for the occasion.

González Pozo assured that medical assistance is terrible and that there are no medications for minimal pain. The prisoners —he indicates— are also following up on consultations with specialists.

The political prisoner adds that since last April 3 he has not received the medical treatment he needs for his degenerative disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, a condition that must be treated with Methotrexate, a drug that is not available in the area.

The inmate adds that the medicine only exists in hospitals, but that the camp authorities do not want to take it to a medical center. Although they promise that they will solve the medication, so far there is no indication of the steps taken to that end.

“I feel very bad if the treatment. They can’t keep me in here without my medication,” Eldris told CubaNet.

“I went five months without my medical treatment. Now there is only the medicine in the hospital, but they don’t want to take me every Wednesday to inject myself”, she lamented.

Eldris González Pozo also revealed that the camp has been experiencing problems with the water supply networks for about two weeks, for which the authorities have been forced to guarantee a daily tanker truck for the inmates.

On January 4, 2022, the family of González Pozo submitted the request for extra-criminal release for the second time, alleging that the confinement in the Plan Confianza labor camp interrupted his medical treatment.

On December 31, 2021, he received the denial order for the first request for extra-penal release, filed in August. Then, the court held that the commission that dealt with the case ruled that the prisoner was receiving systematic medical care.
