MIAMI, United States. — The inmate Roberto Águila Ferrer, who is serving a sentence in the Combinado del Este, in Havana, was beaten by officers of that penitentiary center, he reported by telephone to CubaNet political prisoner Jorge Ernesto Pérez García, a former member of the group clandestine.
The source indicates that Águila Ferrer had a discussion with an officer identified as Giancarlo. The officer not only verbally assaulted, but immediately afterwards he and other repressors beat the inmate and sprayed him in the eyes.
In protest of the aggression, the victim went on a hunger strike and the incident, classified by the military as “indiscipline”, served as an excuse to deny him the change to a minimum severity regime.
According to the testimony of Pérez García, at the time of the telephone communication with this newspaper, Águila Ferrer said that he felt sore from the blows, especially those received to the stomach. He, too, had a red face from the still latent effect of the chemical.
The precise information indicates that the retaliation of the prison officers occurred due to the protests of Águila Ferrer due to the little food available. Both inmates also agree that officer Giancarlo is known for his terrible treatment of inmates.
Roberto Águila Ferrer is being held in company 7 (2nd floor, north wing of building 2), where he works as a “tanker”, the name given to the person in charge of distributing food to the prisoners.
In the case of the complainant, Jorge Ernesto Pérez García (46 years old), he has been held captive in the Combinado del Este for two years and ten months. The inmate was a member of the subversive group Clandestinos and responsible, among other actions, for painting busts of José Martí red in different parts of Havana.
Pérez García is 46 years old and lives in the Altahabana neighborhood, belonging to the Boyeros municipality. In a previous communication, he indicated that he was arrested on January 7, 2020 and subsequently received a one-year prison sentence for the alleged crime of “counterrevolution”, plus another four years in prison for an alleged crime of drug trafficking, accusation which, he claims, is completely false.
