SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The political prisoner Ángel Jesús Véliz Marcanoa participant in the historic protests of July 11, 2021, is on hunger strike in the Kilo 9 prison, in Camagüey, to demand that the prison authorities and State Security respect the change to a minimum severity regime. .

In a letter posted on social networks, Véliz Marcano stated that he has maintained impeccable conduct in prison but even in this way he has not been able to obtain a change to another prison regime that would later allow him to obtain conditional release.

“I am in a state of starvation (on a hunger strike) to demand that the Cuban government, specifically the organ of the penitentiary system and State Security, respect both political prisoners and common prisoners, the right legitimate to progress to the minimum security regime and then have conditional freedom since even maintaining impeccable conduct we are denied progress and Cuba is a society of rights,” he wrote in the letter.

And he added: “I think that this should not be trampled on so blatantly, and without any reason, even more so, with people who are in prison for thinking differently and demanding changes for our Cuba that it so urgently needs.”

Although his aunt, concerned about the young man’s health, contacted the prison authorities by telephone to find out the status of the political prisoner, Jordan Escalona, head of the prison, when answering, said that he had to personally go to the prison to to know how the prisoner was and hung up, without adding more details.

For her part, Ángel Jesús’s mother, Ailex Marcanofrom exile, where she was forced to go, she advocated for her son’s life and asked for his freedom and respect for his rights.

“Angel Jesús, like so many other political prisoners, is denied the progress of the prison regime just for thinking differently, for wanting a free Cuba, a better Cuba. What they commit with me is abuse, abuse over and over again. “They made us separate and here I am in the United States, where they opened the doors to me but my son is alone, practically alone there with his ideas, with his firm thoughts,” she said in a Facebook broadcast.

In turn, he asked Cubans for help to raise their voices for his son, “as they are now doing for the singer, El Taiger, who I so much wish would be saved, because he is a human being.” “Ask for freedom for my son, Ángel Jesús Véliz Marcano, who is demanding freedom for the people of Cuba.”

On two occasions the political prisoner has been denied the change of measure after last October alleging alleged indiscipline for not granting it.

Ángel Jesús Véliz Marcano was sentenced to six years in prison for the crimes of attack and public disorder after participating in the demonstrations on July 11 and 12, 2021.

His mother, Ailex Marcano, has been one of the standard bearers of the resistance of the relatives of the 11J prisoners, who demand the unconditional release of their loved ones.

At the end of last May, Ailex Marcano Fabelo arrived in Miami, United States.

Since his arrival in that country, as he did in Cuba, Ailex Marcano has not ceased to denounce the injustice suffered by his son and other political prisoners. “We continue with our complaints, with our testimonies. Because we cannot remain silent, we cannot get tired and we have to continue reporting,” he stated.
