HAVANA, Cuba.- This Thursday, December 15, at the Westchester Regional Library, located at 9445 Coral Way, a discussion will take place with several express Cuban politicians. The event, convened by Patria de Martí-The Cuban American Voice and the Democratic Alliance, will be held in support of the feature film plantedby director Lilo Vilaplana, which began shooting last August.
The political imprisonment of women has been less visible compared to that of men, although not less suffered. For this reason, the filmmaker planted decided to focus on the lives of three women who tell their stories of struggle from Castro’s prisons.
The film, which is a tribute to all political prisoners because of the dictatorship established by Fidel Castro in 1959, is a fictional story inspired by real events, which highlights the dedication and courage of Cuban women.
The programming of the event at the Westchester Regional Library will include Julio M. Shiling as moderator, with the participation of Lilo Vilaplana himself and a selection of panelists featuring important figures from the female political prison, including Alicia del Busto, Genoveva Canaval, Ana Lázara Rodríguez , Elba González, Iliana Curra, Nilda Díaz, Marta de la Paz, Nelis Rojas and Juana Sánchez.
The evening promises fascinating testimonies from those who gave up a quiet life to work, from underground, against the Castro regime since 1959 itself. Some of these women served more than ten years in prison for having played an active role within the resistance. and not precisely collecting food, medicine and weapons for the rebels.
Among them there were plenty of courage to do what they did, endure all kinds of humiliation and be able to survive to tell what it was like to face the dictatorship of Fidel Castro. Westchester Regional Library will host an unforgettable meeting; an opportunity to get to know and help preserve that part of Cuba’s historical memory that Castroism has worked to destroy.
