The Independent Electoral Political Organization Committee (Copei) announced its support for the decision for Venezuela to withdraw from the Rome Statute, the instrument that gave rise to the International Criminal Court (ICC), reported the organization’s secretary general, Juan Carlos Alvarado, during a press conference.
«We are going to accompany and support the necessary search to get out of this International Criminal Court that has not left any benefit to our Venezuela and that has served to search for a shield simply in terms of human rights. But what human rights? If the main human rights violators are not part of the International Criminal Court and attack Venezuela,” said Secretary Juan Carlos Alvarado.
The leader pointed out that the ICC has acted in an unbalanced manner and has served “simply as a lobby for an international law firm for States and governments that do not make common cause with those who today seek to impart justice.”
Alvarado recalled that the debate on Venezuela’s exit from the Rome Statute is already being discussed in the National Assembly, where, in the first discussion, the repeal of the accession law in force since 2002 was unanimously approved. “We are going to accompany and support this decision because the Court has done nothing for the citizens of our Venezuela, where a fundamental human right such as access to their own resources is violated.”
In that sense, he mentioned the effects of international blockades and sanctions against our country, which have had an impact on the productivity and purchasing power of Venezuelans. “The main human rights violators are part of the International Criminal Court and have attacked Venezuela since the beginning of the sanctions.”
Finally, he reported that Copei hopes that Venezuela’s departure from this body will take place through the corresponding legal mechanisms, as happened at the time with the Organization of American States (OAS). “The country deserves that we make an act of vindication and coherence, especially in the responsibility of being in bodies that do not benefit Venezuela in any way.”
