Police take facilities of La Corriente Feminista

The Police of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo ordered the confiscation of the facilities of some of the non-governmental organizations whose legal status was cancelled. Among those confiscated is La Corriente. The takeover of Operación Sonrisa and Centro Humboldt has also been denounced on social networks.

The Mesoamerican Initiative of Human Rights Defenders (IM-Defensoras) issued an urgent alert for the seizure of the building where the NGO La Corriente Feminista operated. “We received information that the Nicaraguan police are illegally taking over the facilities of La Corriente Feminista,” the organization wrote on its social networks.

The organization Movimiento Autónomo de Mujeres (MAM) referred to the confiscation of the assets of La Corriente Feminista. She wrote on her Twitter account: “The dictatorship will never be able to silence feminist women.”

After the annulment of the legal personality of the organizations, it is established that the assets and shares that belong, «will have, after liquidation, the destination foreseen in the Constitutive act or in its Statute. If nothing has been arranged in this regard, these will become the property of the State in accordance with the Law of the matter.

Upon learning of the cancellation of the legal status of the NGO, the director of La Corriente Feminista, María Teresa Blandón, stated that it is an attempt to silence the voices of the organizations that the regime cannot control in its “obsession” to remain in the can.

Blandón also argued that the Executive outlaws these NGOs to “reinforce the logic of patronage control with which this government has related to the people since its return to power 15 years ago.”

He noted that the NGOs have been closed down not necessarily for “being critical of the Ortega Murillo regime, although some were directly so, but it was enough that they were not under the control of the regime and that they were not willing to repeat the official discourse” to be annulled. .

In the case of the NGO La Corriente, Blandón commented that it was banned for denouncing, since Ortega returned to power in 2007, “the false rhetoric of the regime” and “the manipulation they have done with women, especially with that of the most poor, and the lack of commitment to women’s rights’.

80 feminist NGOs canceled since 2018

IM-Defensoras denounced earlier this week that 80 feminist NGOs have been outlawed by withdrawing their legal personality by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo since December 2018.

In the month of June of this year alone, in the repressive escalation against freedom of association, the regime canceled 27 organizations that work for the human rights of women, young people and girls.

“The cancellation of these organizations has been supported by arbitrary procedures by the responsible institutions, which have put up all kinds of obstacles or have directly refused to receive the administrative documentation required by law, despite submitting it in a timely manner,” denounced IM-Defenders.

The NGO explained that the cancellation of the legal personality of the associations also includes the confiscation of their offices, the occupation of all their assets, criminalization, harassment, and attacks on their members.

IM-Defender refers that the closure of the NGOs generates a «serious impact on the rights of Nicaraguan womenleaving them in a situation of greater vulnerability, exposure to violence and the violation of their fundamental rights».
