Members of the Republican Guard detained members of the Single Union of Freight Transportation and Allied Branches (Sutcra), who were demonstrating at the entrance to the port of Montevideo. As reported by Telemundo, the group of about 50 workers had cut off traffic in that area of the city since early morning.

Officials had warned trade unionists with an eviction order in hand how they would proceed.

The president of the PIT-CNT, Marcelo Abdala, was also present at the place. As explained by the leader, when he found out what was happening se communicated with the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber and asked him to “not repress.”

The workers demonstrated at the scene claiming to regulate the electronic control of the hours that are carried out in the sector.

The director of Coexistence of the Ministry of the Interior, Santiago González, told the press the police procedure was correct since it was acted by order of the Prosecutor’s Office and in accordance with the current legal framework. “Here you cannot not comply with the law. This is not the law of the one who shouts the loudest,” he said. “They know (from the carriers) that they cannot cut. They can be on the sidewalk and protest all day,” he said.
