Police investigate racism case at Uerj de São Gonçalo

The case took place on August 4 and was registered at the 73rd Police Station (Neves) as a racial slur and threat. The aggressor would be a classmate of the victim, and, according to the police, witnesses are being heard and investigations are underway to clarify the facts.

Uerj reported that it regrets the episode of racism and said it provided full support to the student who was attacked. “The student was accompanied to the police station by a professor and a social worker from the university, to file a complaint. The institution will closely monitor the case,” she said in a statement.

Repudiation

In repudiation of the aggression, a protest was organized at the college earlier this week, and posters against racism were taken to the campus. After the act, however, students reported that messages apologizing to the rape of black women and against the quota system were pasted in the men’s bathroom.

The Academic Center of the Faculty of Teacher Training, through its social networks, repudiated the racist and misogynistic message. “It is unacceptable that this happens in any space and, in this case, it has an additional regret: the fact that it is happening on a campus for training teachers, who mostly leave the university to teach in public education,” he said in a message. published yesterday.

Also in a repudiation note published yesterday on social media, the Directorate of the Faculty of Teacher Training stressed that there is no internal rule of the university to investigate the conduct of students and considered it urgent that a regulation establishing these investigation procedures be debated and approved.

“The recurring episodes of discrimination experienced at FFP are extremely serious, incompatible with legislation, with the academic environment and with ethical principles”, says the text.

Regarding racist and misogynistic messages, Uerj stated that they will be part of the police investigation and the university’s internal administrative investigation. The Civil Police said that no incident has yet been registered regarding these posters.

Uerj also adds that, as a pioneer in the implementation of the quota policy in Brazil, it repudiates any racist act and, for 20 years, has been working to promote diversity in the university environment.

“The university also encourages the creation of collectives and student organizations for black students, as it understands the role they play in the anti-racist struggle and in promoting dialogue within the institution.”
