Officers from the Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Division of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) managed to dismantle a criminal gang before they could kidnap Juan Carlos Betancourt Uribe, mayor of Puerto Cabello.
Following the operation carried out by the agents, three people were arrested: Francisco Javier Lozada Lamas, Darwin Antonio Barrientos Díaz and Carolina Herrera Medina.
It should be noted that Lozada Lamas served as the mayor’s bodyguard and was the key piece in orchestrating the aborted kidnapping.
During the procedure, authorities seized cell phones and a firearm as evidence, which reinforces the hypothesis that it was a carefully organized plan.
Fortunately, Betancourt Uribe is duly protected and under police guard.
The mayor is expected to issue an official statement on this matter in the coming hours.
