The Civil Police of the State of São Paulo launched, on the morning of this Tuesday (14), Operation Poison Source – Fountain of Poison. The goal is to dismantle criminal actions that involve the production and sale of alcoholic beverages adulterated with methanol.
20 search and seizure warrants were issued, seven in São Paulo and the others in the cities of Santo André, Poá, São José dos Campos, Santos, Guarujá, Presidente Prudente and Araraquara. There are 150 police officers on the streets in this action.
According to the latest bulletin released on Monday night (13), the state of São Paulo confirmed three new cases of methanol poisoning in the cities of Osasco, São Bernardo do Campo and the capital. There are now 28 victims. One hundred cases remain under investigation. Three deaths are also under analysis. There are five deaths already confirmed due to methanol poisoning in São Paulo.
Confirmed cases
The report from the Ministry of Health, released this Monday, says that the country has 32 confirmed cases of methanol poisoning after drinking alcoholic beverages. There are, in total, 181 incidents under investigation in various regions of Brazil. At least 320 suspicions were discarded.
In addition to São Paulo, with 28 victims of poisoning, there are also three in Paraná and one in Rio Grande do Sul.
There are many suspicions in all regions of the country: São Paulo (100), Pernambuco (43), Espírito Santo (nine), Rio Grande do Sul (six), Rio de Janeiro (five), Mato Grosso do Sul (four), Piauí (four), Goiás (three), Maranhão (two), Alagoas (two), Minas Gerais (one), Paraná (one) and Rondônia (one).
