The recent decision of the Federal Chamber to reopen a case for the assets of Cristina Kirchner and promoting his investigation for illicit enrichment has generated a great stir in the political and judicial sphere of Argentina.
This measure once again puts the sworn statements and asset developments of the former president and current vice president of the country in the spotlight. The case in question focuses on the inconsistencies detected in the sworn statements of Cristina Kirchner between 2010 and 2014, a period that includes the dissolution of the marital partnership after the death of her husband, former president Néstor Kirchner.
The Financial Information Unit (UIF) filed the complaint, pointing out omissions and errors in the presentation of property and financial assets, as well as discrepancies in the reported values of real estate.
The case had previously been filed by Judge Julián Ercolini, who, together with prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita, considered that the facts were minor details with no criminal relevance. However, the FIU appealed this decision, arguing that these were not simple errors, but rather significant inconsistencies that needed to be thoroughly investigated.
The Federal Chamber, made up of judges Leopoldo Bruglia, Pablo Bertuzzi and Mariano Llorens, decided to revoke the file of the case and ordered an exhaustive accounting expert report to be carried out on the sworn asset declarations of Cristina Kirchner.
Judges Bruglia and Bertuzzi stressed the importance of clarifying the irregularities detected through a detailed analysis of the documentation. For his part, Judge Llorens advocated for an immediate investigation, arguing that the inconsistencies were not an isolated event, but part of an alleged broader structure of illicit property maneuvers.
Items
Among the elements highlighted in the investigation are the erroneous exteriorization of an 87,000 m² land in El Calafate, registered in the name of Austral Construcciones SA, and the omission of fixed terms and deposits in dollars in the sworn statements.
These inconsistencies have led judges to consider that an accounting expert opinion is necessary to shed light on the discrepancies detected and determine whether there were associated tax consequences. The reopening of this case has profound political and judicial implications. From a political point of view, Cristina Kirchner faces a new challenge that could affect his career and public image.
