The musician and poet Luiz Galvão, founder of the group Novos Baianos, died last night (22), at the age of 87, in the capital of São Paulo. He had been hospitalized since September 16, with suspected gastrointestinal bleeding, at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo. He was then admitted to the Instituto do Coração, where he died. The cause of death was not disclosed. There is still no information about the burial.
Galvão was born in Juazeiro, in the north of Bahia, on July 22, 1937. In addition to being a musician, he was a professional soccer player in Juazeiro and Bahia’s indoor soccer champion. Graduated in agronomy, he practiced the profession for six years, when he decided to make a living from art.
With the Novos Baianos, Galvão released the album I ended up cryingwho joined samba, rock, bossa nova, frevo, choro and baião. The album featured tracks like black black, mystery of the planet, The girl dances and beast is you. The collection was chosen by the magazine rolling stone as the best in the history of Brazilian music, in October 2007.
In total, there were eight studio albums, two live albums, and two of the group’s reunions. Luiz Galvão wrote most of the songs recorded by the group.
