The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, on behalf of Citizen Power, expressed his support for the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, who this Monday assumed leadership of the country in the absence of President Nicolás Maduro, kidnapped by the United States.
During the ceremony of notification of the installation of the new board of directors of the National Assembly to Citizen Power, prosecutor Saab denounced the kidnapping of the Venezuelan head of state and the first lady, Cilia Flores, while stating that they will accompany Rodríguez in this task that has been assigned to him.
Likewise, he asked the United States Government that the presidential couple be returned to Venezuelan territory, since their detention is illegal.
The country is in order
He pointed out as a “war crime” the bombing perpetrated in Venezuela by the US military forces, where there were injuries and deaths.
He highlighted the maturity of the Venezuelan people in the face of this act of State terrorism, at the same time, he stressed that the country is in order at this time, demonstrating its commitment to peace.
He called for civic-military-popular-police and institutional unity, and all public powers at this time of the country, to continue protecting national sovereignty.
President Maduro’s mandate ends in 2031
He recalled that the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, was re-elected on July 28, 2024, taking office on January 10, 2025 to fulfill the constitutional mandate until 2031.
In that sense, he pointed out that the immunity of the head of State is a principle of constitutional rank on a universal scale and a fundamental norm of international law.
Likewise, he said that under customary international law ratified by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), current leaders enjoy absolute personal immunity, which means that they cannot be arrested or prosecuted by foreign courts.
The military operation, which was carried out without a prior declaration of war or resolution of the UN Security Council, constitutes an illegal armed aggression of a terrorist nature that violates the charter of the United Nations.
The forced disappearance of the presidential couple is classified as an international kidnapping and an illegitimate deprivation of liberty.
He recalled that the US Constitution itself grants the president of that nation powers, but the resolution of war powers requires authorization from Congress for military actions and that did not happen in the attack on Venezuela.
