Podcast Los Condenados: What is happening with the political prisoners in Cuba?

MIAMI, United States. — The situation of the prisoners of July 12 in La Güinera and the trial of the artists Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Osorbo occupied space in the last installment of the podcast the damned, produced by CubaNet.

The program, hosted by journalist Maite Luna and activist Marcel Valdés, featured the testimony of Emilio Román, father of three of the 11J protesters in La Güinera, and the intervention of Louise Tillotson, researcher for the Caribbean of the organization Amnesty International (AI).

In the case of Román, he demands the freedom of his three sons Mackyani, Yosney and Emiyoslán, the latter of whom was barely 18 years old at the time of the protests.

Tillotson, for his part, assured that AI has asked the Cuban regime on several occasions for access to prisons to monitor the state of inmates on the island, without receiving a response so far.

“It is something that is done in almost all the countries of the region. It is not complex to let organizations enter. That’s why I come back to the same question. What does the government have to hide?

The researcher pointed out that activism and disclosure are essential to draw international attention to the cases of political prisoners and generate pressure on the island’s regime.

“It is very important that people continue to raise their voices and speak for the people who cannot speak in Cuba,” Tillotson said.
