PLD says government seeks to discredit Danilo Medina

It says that no one can be criminally responsible for the acts attributed to others, regardless of the degree of consanguinity.

The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) firmly and categorically rejected the mention made by the Special Prosecutor for Persecution against Corruption (Pepca) to former President Danilo Medina in the accusation of the alleged corruption network dismantled through Operation Pulpo.

The anticorruption prosecutors recently filed a formal accusation against the defendants in the Pulpo case, in whose file they affirm that Alexis Medina Sánchez, the main implicated, without being a successful businessman achieved a high economic rise “due to actions and omissions” of his brother, former president Danilo Medina Sánchez, who ruled the country between 2012 and 2020.

Faced with these accusations, the Political Committee of the PLD met yesterday and subsequently presented its position on the matter. The secretary general of the PLD, Charlie Mariotti, who spoke on behalf of the party, classified the mention of the former president in the file as “tendentious and irresponsible,” and said that this “only has the purpose of discrediting Danilo Medina as a political figure and , consequently, to discredit the purple party as the main opposition party ”.

He pointed out that “it is unprecedented and unacceptable for the government to use an institution like Pepca to make public defamatory accusations” against the former president of the Republic, who is also the president of the PLD.

“With this action, the Public Ministry lends itself to be part of a political game of the government trying to divert attention from the national problems that affect the Dominican people, and that this administration has been unable to solve, such as rising inflation and high cost of living, public insecurity, inefficiency in the electricity sector, inefficiency in all social programs that had been successful in the past, “said Mariotti.

The PLD urges militants to be vigilant in defending the party’s credibility in the face of “defamatory accusations.”

“There is politicization of the processes”

The secretary general of the PLD affirmed that there is a clear politicization of the judicial processes that are in the interest of the government and that they are carried out in violation of the rules of due process, “since no one can be criminally responsible for the acts that are imputed to others. “

He argued that the authorities only focus on highlighting the accusations against former officials of the opposition party, but that nothing is advanced or reported on the drug trafficking files that involve municipal and legislative officials members of the Modern Revolutionary Party.
He asked his militants to be attentive and pending before “defamatory accusations” that the Public Ministry could present.

Pepca accusations to Alexis Medina

In the accusatory brief, the Special Prosecutor for the Persecution of Administrative Corruption (Pepca) establishes that the defendant benefited from an advantageous relationship with the State and that he allocated millionaire funds through the “Tornado Fuerzas Vivas” movement for various political candidates of the time. The ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), including campaigns by his brother, former president Danilo Medina Sánchez and Gonzalo Castillo.

La Pepca says that Alexis went from becoming “a small businessman, with a bad reputation that had bankrupted the few ventures he had started”, and with “some legal proceedings for issuing checks without provision of funds”, into a prosperous supplier of multiple state agencies.
