Spanish players will be paid in the same way as men when they play matches with their national team, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Tuesday.
“By the agreement, the bonuses received in percentages by the players are equal to those received by the players from Spain,” the federation reported.
“In addition, the image rights that the soccer players will receive are regularized and improved and substantial improvements in the working conditions of the Spanish soccer team are agreed upon,” the agency added.
The president of the federation, Luis Rubiales, spoke of “an important day”.
“The agreement that we signed today is at the forefront of the world of football. We closed a five-year agreement that will hopefully reach the next World Cups and Europeans and hopefully the Olympic Games,” he said.
“We have to promote women’s sport, we work to shorten the distances with men’s. We have worked since 2018 so that the players benefit from their image rights,” added Rubiales.
The agreement, which regulates the next five years, will allow male and female players to have the same conditions regarding bonuses and image rights.
Working conditions will also be equalized, as well as provisions related to travel, food and accommodation.
The president of the Futpro union, Amanda Gutiérrez, who represents the players in the negotiations, declared that it is a “historic” day.
In this way, Spain joins Brazil, England, the United States, Norway and Denmark in an agreement on equal pay for its players.
