Santo Domingo, DN – The Botellas de Amor Foundation will convert the collected bottles into Plastics for Schoolchildren in plastic wood to build street furniture.

The director and executive vice president of the foundation, Fermín Arturo Acosta, praised the decision of the Mayor’s Office of the National District to hold the first edition of Plastics for Schoolchildren on Sunday, August 11.

“We make a recycled plastic profile that is a plastic wood, and with that we make urban furniture such as benches, chairs, tables, playgrounds and the long-term goal is to make housing,” he explained about the process they carry out.

He described the fact that this time plastics are being collected as a contribution to education as a great initiative.

“We are very grateful to the mayor, the city council and all the collaborators and sponsors who participate in Plastics for Toys, because without them it would not have been possible for the Botellas de Amor Foundation to have this social collaboration with the community,” he said.

In the fourth edition of Plastics for Toys, held in January of this year, 3,040,445 bottles were collected, surpassing the 2.2 million from last year. In both editions, the bottles were destined for Bottles of Love.

Fermín Arturo Acosta hopes that the citizens of the capital will take Plastics for Schoolchildren even more seriously, given what this initiative means in terms of education.

She also said that the foundation runs an environmental education programme, assisting schools to teach children how to separate waste.

Bottles of Love considers invaluable contribution of the DN Mayor’s Office

According to the director of Botellas de Amor, there is no way to quantify the value that the contribution made by the Mayor’s Office of the National District to Plastics for Toys has for the foundation.

“The significance for us as a foundation is invaluable, since thanks to the mayor’s office we have not only had other public institutions that have approached us, but we have also received donations on two occasions,” he said in reference to the 2023 and 2024 editions of Plastics for Toys.

Plastics for Schoolchildren

Since the announcement a few weeks ago of the first edition of Plastics for School Supplies, families in the National District have begun collecting bottles for August 11.

Attendees will be able to purchase a backpack with supplies and a tablet for 500 plastic bottles. A backpack full of supplies can be exchanged for 300 bottles. Both options come with a thermos that maintains the temperature, in order to reduce the use of plastic bottles.

In addition, the council specified that the ages eligible to receive the supplies will be from 5 to 18 years.

Likewise, up to two backpacks will be given out for each ID of the guardian who attends the exchange. In this regard, the ADN clarified that it is essential to present this identity document confirming residence in the National District for guardians to be able to participate in this activity.
