Plants are being built that will produce more energy than Punta Catalina

President Louis Abinader started the building of two power generation plants to natural gas in the Pepillo Salcedo municipalityin Montecristi, whose combined capacity exceeds that installed in the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Power Plant.

The first of the two blocks is made up of the gas terminal and a 420 MW combined cycle gas turbine plant, and was awarded to Manzanillo Gas & Power, consortium made up of Haina Investment Company (HIC), Shell Gas & Power Development (Shell) and Energía de las Américas (Enerla).

The second block will install a 420 MW combined cycle gas turbine plant, granted to Manzanillo Energymade up of the companies, Coastal Dominicana, Manzanillo Energy and Lindsayca.

The representative of Manzanillo Gas & Power, Luis Mejia Brache, stated: “The installation of this solid energy infrastructure will contribute to supplying the growing demand for electricity in the Dominican Republic with efficient and abundant generation to accompany its development.” The executive also stressed that the important investment to be made will not require public funds. “This accounts for effective management on the part of the Government and great confidence in the future of the Dominican Republic on the part of the private companies that will build these facilities,” he stressed.

In his words, on behalf of Manzanillo Energy, Jaime Santana Bonetti, He affirmed: “This project that sees the light today is loaded with value (beyond the economic) and with special meaning; It is a promise of development and industrialization, a national commitment to promote Montecristi”.

In 2021, the Dominican Government launched an international public tender for the development of this megaproject, which will become the second gas terminal in the Dominican Republic.

On May 30, 2022, the winning consortiums were announced, as a result of an efficient and transparent process that included observers and technical, economic, and legal advisors, in which 16 proposals participated.
