Piura: Three police officers sentenced to prison for releasing a detainee

Three non-commissioned officers of the National Police will be sent to the prison after the Judiciary ordered them 10 months of preventive detention for the alleged crimes of concussion and procedural fraud to the detriment of the State. They are being investigated because they falsely accused a young man of carrying a stolen cell phone and he was taken to the Tambogrande police station. In addition, they requested and received S/1,400 to release him.

The Sixth Investigative Court of Piura was the one who issued the measure against the police officers, Bryan Smith Maza Cagallaza, Leandro Juniors Jocope Almestar and Jorge Armando Martínez Álvarez. The prison requirement was supported by the Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Corruption Crimes of Officials of Piura.

While a third-rate non-commissioned officer and an ensign of the PNP will face the process in freedom, because the court issued them the measure of restricted appearance. Both are investigated because they would have signed the documentation regarding the case.

The events occurred in the early morning of June 11, 2025, when the police illegally detained citizen GCHS on the corner of Jirón Huancabamba and Jirón Sullana, in the district of Tambogrande.

He was falsely accused of carrying a stolen cell phone, even though the equipment had legal origin. According to the investigation, they determined that there was no flagrancy, requirement or valid reason for a police identity check.

After that, the victim filed a complaint against the police officers at the Tambogrande police station, because they had requested money for his release and he gave them S/ 1,450 soles in two parts. All of them were intervened in Sullana, Tambogrande and Talara.

Given this, on November 22, police officers were intervened in the cities of Sullana, Tambogrande and Talara.
