Piura: Neighbors of El Chilcal announce radical measures

Neighbors of the and other sectors protested the constant collapses of drains that continue to affect dozens of families. Sewage persists in the streets generating strong nauseating odors.

For two weeks, wastewater has been stagnant in the streets of the El Chilcal urbanization, in Piura. Although they have repeatedly requested the attention of the authorities, the problem persists.

According to neighbors, the problem began in June 2025, however, in recent months the emergence of putrid waters has been constant, harming the health of the people who live in this area.

“The indifference is total on the part of the authorities and we as citizens are seeing more drastic measures taken. One is going to the EPS Grau to protest and the other is that we are not going to pay the water bills starting this month of February until this flood is resolved,” said César Quevedo Pozo.

He specified that he will coordinate with all the neighbors to take this measure since the EPS Grau cannot charge for a service that it is not providing.

“They talk about sanitation, but what sanitation is it, this is an attack on public health, it goes against our personal interests in terms of health. Our things are lost every time we flood and no one gives us a hand. Likewise, they said that they will report those who are responsible,” said the neighbor.

For his part, Martín López, secretary of Juveco El Chilcal-Magisterial, stated that they have to wear masks 24 hours a day due to the powerful odors that these greenish waters emanate.

“You can’t live like this, we have to wear masks. (…) but when this dries out, because of the sun it is more complicated. There is a school nearby, they are also harmed because this problem has been going on for years,” López insisted.

Faced with this problem, the EPS Grau issued a statement indicating that the problem is due to the execution of the work called “Improvement of the urban mobility service on Grau Avenue”, which would have caused the clogging of the mailboxes and generated the outcropping of wastewater in this part of Piura.

Despite this, the EPS Grau has carried out palliative work with a bucket and hydrojet machine, but it has not been enough, since until yesterday the problem persisted.
