Nearly two thousand fishermen, stevedores and sellers of this food product from the province of Talarain the Piura region, have been going through difficult times, because they cannot carry out their fishing tasks. This, due to the oil spill from the Talara Refinery and operated by Petroperú, which occurred in the Lobitos district.
They met at the Talara landing stage and told of the drama they have been experiencing, because they have not been able to go out to do their work for more than ten days, which has also been affecting their families who survive from this work. Given this, they questioned the lack of importance of Petroperú in helping them.

“We have been out of work for more than a week due to the oil spill. Many colleagues are affected by this situation. What we want is for the Government to support us because we urgently need it for our families so that they can survive, since we are going through a hard time,” said fisherman César Arcela Sullón.
While Felícita Chira, a dock worker in Talara, said that they have not had a job since the oil spill occurred. “Here we are dock workers. Now, with this oil spill (problem), how are we going to sustain ourselves? This has affected us all. Where are we going to live? This is what (the authorities) have to do and solve this problem,” he indicated.
While Sifrig Arévalo, from the Stevedores Association of the province of Talara, questioned the lack of support in the face of this serious problem that has been harming them.
“The impact can be clearly seen. Fishermen cannot go out (to fish). They don’t have a job. Petroperú wants us to give them evidence. With this, what more evidence does Petroperú want? If all the people (fishermen) are not going out to earn their daily living in Talara. This affects all of Talara, not just Lobitos,” Arévalo said.
He added that another problem there is is strong waves. “(In addition) there was an anomalous wave that affected from La Brea-Negritos to Acapulco in Tumbes. With this, I don’t know what the authorities will expect to look at the fishermen in the Talara area…,” said Sifrig Arévalo.
It should be remembered that the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Environmental Matters of Sullana opened a preliminary investigation against the company Petroperú for the alleged commission of the crime of environmental pollution, after the oil spill on Las Capullanas beach, in the district of Lobitos.
Meanwhile, the National Government, through the Ministry of Defense and the Talara Port Captaincy of the Navy, has been supervising the cleaning and recovery tasks of the beaches affected by the oil spill in the province of Talara, in the Piura region.
