More than 273 thousand homes are at risk of flooding during the rainy season in the Piura region, according to National Center for Disaster Risk Assessment, Prevention and Reduction (Cenepred)This was revealed by the Network of Development Studies.
This estimate, which makes this northern area of the country the most vulnerable to a natural phenomenon, is due to the old and insufficient drainage systems that also affect access to drinking water.
“The lack of an adequate drainage system during the rainy season causes homes to flood, which results in a very high economic cost for Piuran families, something that must be prevented by the authorities. Piura urgently needs preventive strategies to mitigate the risks and, to do so, it requires trained people from planning to execution,” said Germán Vega, an economist at Redes.

It should be noted that this year, the Alternative Rainwater Collection and Evacuation System (SARE) was launched to store rainwater and transport it to an evacuation point in the city of Piura, valued at more than 4 million soles. However, according to reports, in February the drainage system itself collapsed due to the rains and the pipes were exposed with the possibility of causing accidents.
They also indicate that the lack of an adequate drainage system can contaminate sources of drinking water during floods, causing restrictions in the water supply. Meanwhile, access to this service in an adequate manner is aggravated if we consider the effects of the accumulation of rainwater such as floods with mud that further affect the availability of clean water, explained the specialist from Redes, Germán Vega.
