Following the national team’s elimination, social media was flooded with messages of support and thanks to the players for their effort and participation in the tournament. However, not all comments were positive. Piter Albeiro became the centre of controversy with his harsh criticism of the athletes. On his X account, he expressed: “That custom of ours of thanking for defeat.”
Albeiro’s criticism did not stop there. He continued with more incisive posts, saying: “Thank you girls, it’s nothing like you don’t know how to kick a penalty” and “That’s why we don’t win titles. If you’re not going to make an effort, don’t go.” These statements sparked a debate among social media users, creating a notable division between those who supported and those who rejected his comments.

Criticisms for and against
On the one hand, some netizens defended Albeiro’s position, arguing that the tendency to “romanticize” defeats instead of demanding more results is one of the reasons why Colombia has failed to win important titles. Comments such as “It really annoys me that people are thankful for defeats, that’s why Colombia never wins anything” and “We romanticize defeat and that’s why we only have one Copa América in our history” reflect this point of view.
On the other hand, many users harshly criticized Piter Albeiro, arguing that his comments were insensitive and inconsiderate. They claimed that the real merit was in the effort and achievements of the players. “We don’t appreciate the defeat. We appreciate the effort and what the girls managed to achieve despite not having a very competitive league,” said some followers. Others added, “Be grateful, it’s obvious that you don’t live in Colombia. Of course we lack mentality, but we play in a league that plays three months a year before we reach the quarterfinals.”
Finally, in the face of the growing wave of criticism, Piter Albeiro published another post on his social networks, saying: “It doesn’t cost me anything to apologize when I have to.”
