PIT-CNT spoke at the UN in a meeting on objectives towards 2030

The member of the International Relations Secretariat of the PIT-CNT, Viviana Rumbo, spoke at the UN in the framework of the presentation of goals and achievements for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030, at a global level. There, the representative of the PIT-CNT said that Uruguayan social organizations “value the efforts of society and the government to overcome Covid-19, as well as the management of the health crisis with universal access to vaccines and Health Insurance. Unemployment”.

According to the speaker, in order to achieve a post-Covid-19 economic and social recovery, in line with the SDGs, the Uruguayan government must “reestablish the policies and programs of the Uruguay National Development Strategy 2050, guarantee sufficient resources and institutional management for a follow-up and a broad social dialogue, in particular in education, at all levels.

Likewise, the presentation of the Uruguayan social organizations denounced before the United Nations that “the comprehensive law on gender violence does not have funding for its full implementation, while femicides continue to increase.” At this point, the representative of the PIT-CNT publicly questioned the Uruguayan government about “what measures and with what part of the National Budget is this serious problem going to be addressed?”

In another of the points addressed, the PIT-CNT and civil society called for “the preparation and implementation of a plan for the recovery of decent jobs, particularly in those sectors with the greatest difficulties due to the pandemic, in the care economy and improve the social safety net.”

The need was also raised to “establish redistributive public policies that transfer income from the richest sectors to the poorest, including minimum living wages and policies for equal pay”, develop “specific employment policies for people with disabilities, review the youth employment approach and consider other approaches such as better links between studies and work, reactivate the National Policy on Climate Change and the participatory National Response System to it, and guarantee sufficient resources for its implementation».

Rumbo said during his speech before the United Nations that the Uruguayan government “showed its success in reducing the fiscal deficit in the midst of a pandemic, thus impacting the well-being of Uruguayan society, reducing social, food and housing policies that are essential to be able to support the sectors most submerged and affected by the crisis. This is a clear setback to be able to achieve the 2030 Agenda because without public investment any progress is impossible.
