PIT-CNT calls for employment policies that build quality work

Through a statement, the trade union center recalled that on the occasion of the central act of Workers’ Day on May 1, it demanded the need to maintain solidarity wages, since if they were not given continuity, several thousand Uruguayans from all over the country would be left without any kind of income.

The proposal to extend the solidarity wages was part of a “battery of measures” that the workers’ union not only raised on the spot, but also presented it in writing to the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou.

After that, an agreement was reached between the government and the Congress of Mayors by which the reissue of the solidarity day program was confirmed and in the middle of this year the corresponding calls will be made.

For the PIT-CNT, this shows that through the facts “the proposals presented by the union central are being taken into account, to mitigate the social contingency that a large part of society is suffering, as a result of the rise in prices, the reduction of the purchasing power of salaries and the precariousness of employment”.

“That is why, although we welcome these measures that are applied immediately, although we believe they are insufficient, we will continue to demand from the PIT-CNT the development of employment policies that build quality work for all Uruguayans to avoid that the only alternative continues to be the creation of precarious and low-wage jobs, and that the exceptional be transformed into permanent”, demands the labor union.
