“Pioneers for Communism! We are going to Nicaragua!”

“¡Pioneros por el comunismo! ¡Nos vamos pa’ Nicaragua!”

Havana Cuba. — This Friday, April 29, under the pretext of being the day in which the imposition of scarves on Cuban schoolchildren who join the José Martí Pioneers Union is celebrated, parades were organized in all the country’s schools “in greeting to the First of May”. Young people of both sexes took to the streets and squares to wave banners and shout slogans of an inevitable government nature.

To add insult to injury, it was their own teachers who led them. These pedagogues, supposedly in charge of instructing and educating, were the ones who manipulated the young herd, by guiding it through public roads. They were also the ones who launched the slogans that the young people later chanted. Presumably they had also made the posters that the latter brandished.

The degree of degradation to which the qualified pedagogues of the regime have reached is portentous. But here it would be worth paraphrasing the now-deceased poet “pericón”, one of the greatest exponents of the “organic intellectuality” of communism: “It is Castro’s Cuba, don’t be surprised at anything!”. Why should we be amazed if in Cárdenas, Matanzas, the fifteen-year-old Reniel Rodriguez He was taken from his classroom, driven and handed over to a patrol car crew for the “crime” of wearing white on November 15. And the one who acted as henchman was none other than his own master!

Can you imagine, dear readers, what those same communists would not have said in times past if—let’s say—the teachers of some public school had taken their boys out behind a liberal conga in support of “Tiburón” or (for that matter it is what himself) of his conservative variant of “There comes the Mayoral sounding the leather”. Or “La Aplanadora”, the battle hymn of the times of the campaign for the election of the last democratic president of Cuba, Dr. Carlos Prío Socarrás!

The followers of Marx, Engels and “alias Lenin” adjust their behavior to a very comfortable motto: “Do what I say, and not what I do”. They virulently criticize those who in other times or latitudes manipulate the youngsters entrusted to their custody, but they themselves do it here and now with absolute impudence. And worst of all: Without asking parents for permission for their children to participate in that political sanctimoniousness!

One surprising facet of this issue is the utter ineffectiveness of such crude indoctrination. Fresh out of these centers, the boys show an uncanny willingness to scamper off en masse to whatever foreign country takes them in! Everything in order to get out of the “paradise of the proletariat”.

But they don’t even need to graduate! The willingness to emigrate is shown even in the midst of the process of communist indoctrination! They have just repeated the slogan “Pioneers for communism! We will be like Che!”; but with the same, and without feeling the slightest remorse or conscience, they get on a raft or a plane to “go see the volcanoes of Nicaragua.”

Can we believe that the brains of the Ideological Department in the Central Committee of the only party are unaware of this reality! Absolutely! It is true that they are incapable, but not to that extent! In my opinion, they are aware of one thing: They cannot mold or brainwash juveniles! But they can train them in double standards! And in that they are fully successful: in training students to feign devotion to a regime for which they truly abhor!

I must confess one thing: despite the revulsion that all this dirty farce inspires in me, I am satisfied that the regime has conceived and carried out this new baseness. Let me explain: while exercising my priesthood this Friday of trying to get some groceries to alleviate the famine suffered by my family, I came across several of those remote-controlled student demonstrations.

The boys, as expected, repeated the slogans launched by their teachers. But I also noticed the attitude of the adults who, from doorways, windows and sidewalks, contemplated the repulsive spectacle. I didn’t see a single gesture of support! Not an applause! Not a “hurray” or a “down”! Not even because it is natural for adults —especially the older ones— to sympathize with the younger generation! All I saw were sullen looks, full of disapproval and outright condemnation.

Apparently —well—, the Castroists seem determined to antagonize their subjects even more! To add fuel to the fire of widespread citizen discontent! And that sounds great to me!
